CHAMPION. s. m. Celui qui combattoit en champ clos pour sa querelle, ou pour la querelle d'autrui. Brave, vaillant champion. Ceux qui ne pouvoient pas combattre de leurs personnes, comme les vieillards, les estropiés, les Ecclésiastiques, les Dames, fournissoient autrefois des champions. Il s'offrit à cette Dame pour être sonchampion.
[b]f♛/b] On dit par extension Champion, au sens de Défenseur. Cet homme est le champion des mauvaises causes. Il s'est sait le champion des Anciens.
[b]f♛/b] On dit par raillerie, d'Un homme qu'on estime peu vaillant, que C'est un vaillant champion.
